What Is Cryolipolysis?
Cryolipolysis is a non-invasive body contouring treatment that uses controlled cooling to target and reduce stubborn, localised fat — the areas often called "diet-resistant," like the flanks, abdomen, thighs, upper arms, and under the chin.
The idea came from an observation in frostbite research: fat cells are more sensitive to cold than the skin and tissue around them. This principle was developed into a treatment that cools fat cells enough to damage them, without harming the skin.
How It Works
During a session, an applicator gently draws the treatment area into a cooling cup and holds it at a controlled temperature for 35 to 60 minutes. Here's what happens in the body:
Cold exposure
Fat cells are cooled to a point that damages them, while the skin stays protected.
Cell death
The damaged fat cells break down naturally over the following days and weeks.
Natural clearance
Your body's immune system gradually processes and removes the dead fat cells over the next 8 to 12 weeks, with continued improvement up to about 4 months.
Because the fat cells are actually eliminated rather than just shrunk, results are long-lasting — as long as your weight stays stable afterwards.
What Results Can You Expect?
- On average, clients see a 15 to 25 percent reduction in fat thickness in the treated area per session.
- Most people start noticing subtle changes around 3 weeks after treatment.
- The most visible results typically show up between 8 and 12 weeks, with final results at around 4 months.
- Many clients choose a second session on the same area once results have fully developed, for more noticeable contouring.
Results build gradually. This isn't a same-day transformation, and that's normal.
Is Cryolipolysis Right for You?
Good candidates typically have:
- Localised, pinchable fat bulges in specific areas
- A weight close to their goal weight
- Reasonably firm, elastic skin
It's not the right fit for:
- ✕Significant weight loss goals — this is a contouring treatment, not a weight-loss treatment
- ✕Areas with significant loose or sagging skin
- ✕Pregnancy
- ✕Certain cold-sensitivity conditions (your provider will screen for these during consultation)
Is It Safe?
Cryolipolysis has a strong safety track record. Common, temporary side effects include redness, swelling, bruising, and mild numbness in the treated area. These usually resolve within a few days to a couple of weeks on their own.
In very rare cases, a condition called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia can occur, where the treated area enlarges instead of shrinking. This is uncommon, but we believe in being upfront about it.
What to Expect During Your Session
What Cryolipolysis Won't Do
To keep things honest:
- ✕It won't replace a healthy diet and exercise routine.
- ✕It won't tighten loose or sagging skin.
- ✕It won't give you dramatic, overnight results.
- ✕Significant weight gain after treatment can still affect the treated area.
The Bottom Line
Cryolipolysis is a safe, well-researched way to reduce stubborn fat pockets without surgery or downtime. Results are gradual but long-lasting, typically reducing fat in the treated area by 15 to 25 percent per session.
It works best for people who are close to their goal weight and looking to fine-tune specific areas, rather than lose significant weight.
