No pain, no gain: the honest truth about downtime after aesthetic treatments

Some treatments involve very little downtime. Others need a bit of planning, patience and realistic expectations. Here is the honest version.

One of the most common questions we get asked is not whether a treatment works. It is whether anyone will be able to tell you have had it done.

That question usually comes in a few different forms. Will I bruise? Will I swell? Will I be able to go to work the next day? Can I book this before a wedding, holiday or big event?

The honest answer is that downtime varies. A lot. Some treatments are easy to fit into a normal week. Others are best booked with a bit of breathing room afterwards. And even with the same treatment, one person may recover quickly while another bruises or swells more than expected.

That is why we always prefer to be straightforward. It is much better to plan properly than to be caught out.

A quick guide to downtime

Botox and anti-wrinkle injections

Usually very little

Most clients return to normal activities straight away. You may have tiny bumps at the injection points for a short time and occasionally a small bruise, but there is usually very little to see.

Dermal fillers

Mild swelling is common

Filler can involve swelling, tenderness and sometimes bruising. Lips in particular can swell more than other areas. Some clients look perfectly presentable the next day. Others need a few days for everything to settle.

Skin boosters and Profhilo

Usually short-lived

You may see small bumps where the product has been placed, along with mild redness or bruising. These usually settle quickly, but it is still sensible not to book too close to an important event.

HIFU

Minimal visible downtime

HIFU does not usually leave obvious marks, but the skin can feel tender afterwards and some clients notice mild redness or puffiness. It is often a good option for people who want little disruption.

Microneedling and RF microneedling

Expect redness

Your skin can look red and feel warm afterwards, a bit like sunburn. For some clients this settles within 24 hours. For others it can take a little longer, especially with stronger treatments.

PRP

A few days can be helpful

Because PRP can involve both injections and microneedling, redness, swelling and occasional bruising are all possible. It is worth planning a little recovery time if you can.

Chemical peels

Varies the most

Some peels cause only light dryness or flaking. Others can involve visible peeling for several days. This is one of the clearest examples of why the right timing matters.

The treatment is only part of the story

Downtime is not just about the treatment itself. It is also about the area being treated, your own healing response, your lifestyle, and what you need to look like over the following few days.

For example, lip filler before a big event is rarely a good idea. Even when the treatment goes beautifully, lips can swell. Under-eye treatments can bruise more easily because the skin is delicate. Chemical peels may leave you dry or visibly flaky right when you want to look polished.

On the other hand, treatments like Botox or HIFU often suit clients who want something subtle with very little disruption.

Why we never promise a one-size-fits-all recovery

In aesthetics, blanket promises are not helpful. Saying there is no downtime at all can sound reassuring, but it is not always realistic.

Some people hardly mark. Others bruise easily. Some clients feel comfortable going straight back to work. Others prefer a day or two at home while swelling settles. None of that means something has gone wrong. It simply means bodies heal differently.

A good consultation should include that conversation. Not just what the treatment does, but what the next few days may look like as well.

Our rule of thumb

If you have a wedding, holiday, photoshoot, party or important meeting coming up, do not leave treatment until the last minute.

Give yourself enough time for swelling, bruising, peeling or tenderness to settle properly. In many cases, that means at least two weeks. Sometimes longer, depending on the treatment.

If you are unsure, ask. We would always rather guide you honestly than squeeze something in at the wrong time.

The goal is not just good results. It is good timing too.

Aesthetic treatments should fit around your life, not create unnecessary stress. Part of good treatment planning is choosing the right option at the right time, with a clear understanding of what to expect afterwards.

That is especially important if you are new to aesthetics. Social media often shows the polished end result, not the swelling on day one, the bruising on day three, or the peeling that can happen before skin looks its best.

Realistic expectations are not negative. They are what help you feel calm, prepared and confident in your decision.
